The conference, co-organized by SPHN and PHRT, showed how personalized medicine can improve patient care. Over two days, researchers presented their work and discussed with patients and policymakers how the future of personalized health might take shape.

On August 28-29, more than 300 participants gathered for the conference From Technology to Treatment at ETH Zurich. Together, they explored how cutting-edge science is transforming personalized health.
With 29 inspiring speakers from Switzerland and abroad, poster pitches, hands-on booths, and plenty of opportunities for exchange, the conference highlighted the power of collaboration between research, clinics, and data science.
Insights from the conference:
- “The Swiss health system is as fragmented as it is because there has been no significant reform in the past 30 years” – Katrin Crameri, DigiSanté program
- “It takes a village to move such a large undertaking forward. This is why the PHRT and SPHN initiatives teamed up to bring together data infrastructure and research platforms.” - Bernd Wollscheid, PHRT Executive Committee Chair
- “Thanks to genomic sequencing we were able to detect rare diseases we wouldn’t have been able to identify otherwise. This enabled us to develop cures that helped patients when nothing else did.” - Marc Caulfield, Queen Mary’s University of London
- “Only when novel targeted therapeutic and diagnostic approaches are tested in clinical trials, they have a chance at making it into the clinic” - Alexander Theocharides, University Hospital Zurich
- “Sepsis in intensive care units is life-threatening, yet its symptoms are often unspecific. Through our National Data Stream, we have built a highly interoperable network to train algorithms that help predict when sepsis will occur.” - Catherine Jutzeler, ETH Zurich
The conference also provided a stage for early-career scientists to showcase their work. A poster award went to Sergio Daniel Hernandez Charpak and Philippe Forero of EPFL for their research on improving treatments for patients with spinal cord injury.
A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, members of the organizational committee, booth hosts, helpers and participants who made this event a success. A powerful showcase of what’s possible and what’s still to come in personalized health.
