New group leader of the SIB Personalized Health Informatics Group

Dr. Davide Chiarugi joins SPHN as the new leader of the SIB Personalized Health Informatics Group (PHI), succeeding Katrin Crameri. With a PhD in Computer Science and extensive leadership experience, he brings strong expertise in data management, data-driven research, and coordinating multi-stakeholder projects.

Dr. Davide Chiarugi holds a Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology, a Master of Philosophy in Mathematical Logic and Theoretical Informatics, and a PhD in Computer Science.

In the past years, he led different groups in the domain of data-driven research, scientific computing, and data management in the context of prestigious institutions such as the Max Planck Society and the University of Cambridge (UK). In these roles, he gained extensive experience in data-driven research and in coordinating a broad network of external partners and institutions to achieve common goals. He is an expert in clinical and research data management and has in-depth knowledge of strict privacy and security regulations for health data while also making data FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. These aspects are crucial for efficient collaboration and the long-term usability of research data.

In his new role, Dr. Davide Chiarugi will oversee the part of the SPHN Data Coordination Center that is hosted by the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, including the FAIR Data and central BioMedIT activities. Since Katrin Crameri’s departure in May 2024, SPHN managing director Thomas Geiger has been supervising the PHI Group ad interim.
